When Juno and Minerva told him he was going to die if he activated the device to save the world, he believed them. They had no reason to lie and Minerva’s expression made it clear that she had been worried. Whether she had been worried about him or about the future of the world if Juno got out, Desmond didn’t know. But he couldn’t help but think that Minerva had a hand in all these. That the reason why he woke up in the city of Jerusalem during the 12th century was because of something she did. Still… He would have appreciated it if she didn’t also return him to his 16-year-old body. Now, having no idea what to do, Desmond decided to let history play out the way it did before and made his way to Alamut to be inducted into the Brotherhood without being part of Masyaf. This way he could monitor everything without being in the middle of it. Unfortunately, he forgot one important thing. Everything he knows of this time period was based on Altaïr’s memories. And, thanks to how different Abstergo’s Animus was from Rebecca’s, Altaïr’s memories had always been incomplete.

“You are… Ibn-la’Ahad?” Kadar asks, very, very carefully. And yeah, Desmond is, in the technical sense of the term. His parents won’t be born for centuries. Desmond is the Son of No One. So he nods, slowly and with some hesitance, and lets Kadar draw what assumptions he may. And fuck, that might just be easier. Calling himself another one of Umar’s sons. The man broke the tenets of the Brotherhood once, who’s to say he didn’t find comfort in any other women, right? It’s not like they’d believe the truth anyway. OR Desmond returns to the beginning to rewrite the ending.

Desmond Miles was supposed to die. Instead, he woke up hundreds of years in the past, helpless and alone. How was he supposed to know that the Altaïr he saw wasn’t a hallucination? Or: Altaïr found a random kid in distress and decided that it was his kid, no take backs. Eventually Ezio shows up to co-parent.

When Desmond activated the device in the Grand Temple, he expected to die. What he didn’t expect was being reborn in the past as his own ancestor, Sef Ibn-La'Ahad.

Ezio said, “She is his; the Gift the Apple bestowed upon him.” Not knowledge and the ability to use it, as Altaïr had asked, or for renewed youth and purpose, as Ezio had. No, when holding the Apple and the ability to wish for anything he desired, Desmond had humbly asked for nothing more and nothing less than the smallest of companions. One that he knew. One that he’d lost, at some point in his too few years. One who was more than willing to cross time and space to be at his side again.
