The Astute Tourist's Guide to Ketterdam

by terribletruths

A love song. Who the hell was listening to such whimsy, amongst the murderers and the thugs of the Barrel?(You are, and you’re the cruelest of them all.)Kaz scowled into the darkness of the room. It’s not like he had much choice, unless he opened the window and shot the singer.---Most sensible people avoid the Barrel during major celebrations, out of a healthy sense of self-preservation and fondness for their limbs and wallets. Kaz, on the other hand, does not have the luxury of avoiding everyone else's good cheer. What he does have is a useless gang full of teenage idiots, an irritatingly persistent three-legged dog, a few memories he'd rather forget, and a time limit.

Who We Really Are

by blurofsound

“You have to die.”Kaz blinked, unsure if the pain was muddling his mind. “What?”“You have to fake your death,” Inej said, her eyes soft yet persistent. “You have to disappear. Go somewhere where they can’t find you until this all blows over.”Silence stretched between them as what she was suggesting loomed in front of him. The burns on his right arm were still hot from the fires that turned the Slat to ash. He could feel the ash on his face, in his hair, in his lungs. He considered Inej’s words and realized they rang true. “I know a place they won’t think to look.”——Or after Kaz is almost killed, he is forced to flee to a small town near Lij, his childhood home. His past, present, and future come crashing together and the crows discover who they really are.

always bet on suede

by macrauchenia

Nina’s overheard advice. Jesper’s clumsy protection. Inej’s unspoken concern. The rest of them ogling like fools over a simple pair of suede gloves. Strange for a murder of crows to get so attached to their residential pigeon. Still, if it kept the others watching over Wylan, then Kaz had one less variable to worry about. [Essentially, Kaz tricks his crows into keeping their naivest member safe]

A warning to the people

by whynotcherries

"Now it’s her turn to show the Barrell what The Wraith can really do, if given the proper motivation. And hurting her partner in crime is plenty motivation for her to act." Someone hurts Kaz in a fight. This is how Inej handles it for him.

Fool's Gambit

by a_y_lin

Jesper was an addict, and he was never supposed to fall for his dealer. But Kaz was good luck. When Kaz dealt the cards, Jesper always broke even at least; if he sat anywhere else at the Crow Club, he'd land himself in even more debt. He knew he should stop, but he couldn't help himself. After accidentally telling his father that he's dating a boy who works at the casino, Jesper goes to the dealer himself. “I need you to pretend to date me. I need to pretend that I come to the casino for you and not--”"Not to gamble yourself into an even bigger pit of debts?" Kaz asked, amused. "What's in it for me?""I'll pay you; just put it on my tab," Jesper offered, and he knew that the dealer had every right to say no. Kaz should have said no, and he looked about ready to, but then something nearly imperceptible shifted in his eyes."Fine, but I charge interest," Kaz acquiesced. "And if you touch me without permission, I will break your arm.""Can I--""No."And so he began his ploy, bringing Kaz gifts and taking photos of the dealer for his father. It was all a ruse, a clever cover story for why he was always at the casino. Or at least, that's what he told himself.

Wax Strangers

by QHQ

Inej and Kaz make no effort to hide their relationship from the others, but they've been joking about it for so long that the reality of it is apparently impossible to comprehend. In which all of the Dregs are astoundingly obtuse, given that they're meant to be part of the top criminal enterprise in the entire city.A 5+1 fic of sorts (but not really), requested by @katleed on tumblr.

You're free (of me)

by a_y_lin

In the past few weeks, it had become tradition for Kaz to meet the sharpshooter for waffles. At first, Kaz had been annoyed with the concept; he would have preferred to enjoy his mornings alone. Though Kaz was loath to admit it, after the first week, he started looking forward to Jesper's company. Despite his usually flippant attitude, he was a good listener, and discussing things aloud helped Kaz think, but he certainly wasn't considering a relationship with the sharpshooter. It wouldn't do any good for him to be distracted, and Jesper would be better off with Wylan, living in a mansion and helping the merchling with paperwork. Jesper's infatuation with Kaz would fade, and they would both continue as if it had never taken root. Then, perhaps, when all that he defied finally caught up to him, Kaz might have remembered it, in passing, and been able to savor the taste, if only for a moment.Kaz was no fool; he knew once he indulged his feelings for Jesper, there would be no turning back. Kaz was already dreading the day Jesper met the wrong end of a knife; if he allowed himself to grow further attached-- he didn't dare imagine. It would be infinitely worse.A post-Crooked Kingdom Kaz/Jesper AU!
