Johnny shuffles in a step ahead of a soaking wet Ponyboy, each of them spooked within an inch of their lives.Soda appears out of thin air, pushing past Darry before he can make a move towards Ponyboy. “What happened?”Ponyboy looks to Johnny with despair, his teeth chattering loudly. “We were in the park and some Socs rolled up,” Johnny says, his tone funny. “We tried getting’ em’ to leave but they wouldn’t listen, they… one of them tried drowning Ponyboy in the fountain.”It’s then that Darry finally notices the bloodied switch clutched in Johnny’s hand. A horrible chill runs down his spine. “Johnny, what did you do?”*Nobody dies that night after the drive-in, but everything still manages to go wrong in the days that follow.

Being in the position he was in, it only made sense for Darry to be the one to take the other guy's place. It would only be for four days. Darry was fine with this.
