The Academy smells just the same as the other new buildings in the village, a cacophony of dust and paint that has Naruto wrinkling his nose. His eyes glance across the unmarked walls and he struggles to remember the signs of wear that had decorated the old Academy with life. It seems the change is unending. He catches the discerning look that Sakura shoots his way as they reach the final landing, a strange uneasiness pushing him to avert his gaze. Instead, Naruto finds his attention drawn to a lone figure standing at the end of the hallway, leaning against one of the walls that frames the doors of the Hokage’s office. Shikamaru looks up at their approach and a wry smile pulls across his face. Naruto doesn’t even register the tension straining his shoulders until it’s gone, waves of relief rushing through him all at once. The war is over and Naruto struggles to find his place in the aftermath.
