The car swung wildly under the protester’s hands, their fists pounding on the windows, and Spike tried to calm his breathing. His throat was threatening to swell up, his stomach twisted in knots, and he wondered if this was how Lou felt when he was stepping back. He could see the shields coming closer, but the glass shattered behind him and greedy hands grabbed him and pulled him over the jagged glass and out of the car. A howl of pain left his lips as his arms caught on the sharp edges, but he bit his lip and twisted in the crowd’s grasp. His name was being screamed from the other side of the car, but when he tried to answer them the hands—covered in his blood—encompassed his mouth.

Someone let a breath out on the other end of the line, and it took a minute but Spike realized it was Greg that had screamed his name—frantic and tortured, so abnormal his mind threw out the possibility in explosion’s sudden wake. “We’re coming for you, buddy,” Sam called over the comms, and Spike could tell by the sound of his voice that he was running hard—not the trained cadence of long distance, but the run of a man burning alive and sprinting for water—, “Jules, we got an ambulance on standby?”

This is just to have a bit’o fun with Whumptober 2021. Not meant to fit in the Beauty of Life world, but might if you ignore inconsistencies.

“Greg?” He asked before the other man could speak, and he could tell he was on speaker by the relieved exhales on the other side. “Oh thank God,” the negotiator whispered back, and Spike barely heard him but he could still pick out the array of emotions that came along with the words. It was like a punch straight to the gut. “Spike, are you okay?” “I’m not hurt,” Spike assured him, “I’m in a wooden box—it kind of looks like a coffin. But I can’t push the top off or kick any of the sides out.” He let the words sink in—because he didn’t want to say it aloud, it would only drive him closer to insanity.

“I need you to promise me that, if you can’t find a way to disable this landmine, you will get out of the blast zone and not place yourself in danger.” Lou breathed out, and Spike’s head snapped up with rage written across his usually cheerful face. “Turn off your radio.” Spike told him cuttingly, reaching down to turn off his own, and Lou’s chest stilled with a single shockwave of movement but he obeyed and turned his off too. There was no cheating, no pretending, because this was Spike, and Lou would do anything for him. “Listen to me, Lewis.” Spike breathed out, stabbing the knife into the sand, “I’m not going to leave you to blow yourself up, do you understand me?”
