“Ah, but monsieur, I have upset you. I should not have said this.” Javert shook his head, and gave another bark of laughter. “It matters not. Valjean is dead. A year since.” The year is 1824 when Inspector Javert arrives in Montreuil-sur-mer. His absence in the town has given Madeleine unprecedented freedom and the ability to offer friendship in a way that he never could before. It is simply unfortunate that Jean Madeleine is not terribly well practised in the art of friendship, and that his existence as an alias should chafe so terribly upon his shoulders.

Javert, God of Order; and Valjean, God of Mercy, are both distressed by the rising discontent in the country of France, although for different reasons. Javert is annoyed that the building revolutionary effort is putting strain on his system, and Valjean just wants everyone to be happy. Mortal war and immortal bickering ensue, but it's all a whole lot fluffier than it sounds.

Fantine raised a hand to point towards what looked to be a bench, one Valjean vaguely recognised from his walks along the Seine, no doubt a conjugation or memory of the one sitting on it. Valjean let Fantine's hand fall from his as he made his way over, a touch of sadness covering his features when the figure came into view properly as he sat next to him. “Javert?”

AU canon divergence: Valjean met Fantine on the day she was fired from the factory.A softening of the heart of a man who thought he would live alone forever, who builds a little family with a woman who thought no kindness would ever be shown to her again.Book-canon, but I think you will follow it if you read the brief forward.

One would be surprised to find out exactly how much of their job involves a truly exorbitant amount of running around and trying to evade detection by the police. Javert switching teams to join the other side of the chase didn’t really change that, it just made it a lot easier for them to get away. Valjean doesn’t give a shit how much Fantine hates his ratty old doc martens; they get him from case to case, from chase to chase. On a related note, it is an acknowledged fact that Jean Valjean is terrible at phone sex.
