And while on its own this would not be an issue, but for whatever reason he couldn’t ever seem to figure out the joy that everybody else got from these ‘happy endings’. The whole idea of romance and marriage was so outrageously confusing it made no sense to him whatsoever. He would have much rather play sports with his friends than think about some person he did not even know the name of. But Fitz was young, he would grow out of it, he had to, everybody else seemed to understand and even enjoy the whole romance thing and so would he one day. It’s not a problem at first, the fact that Sophie’s now asleep on his left side, leaving Fitz on his right, until Fitz, being Fitz (an insatiable cuddler) makes a soft sleepy sound and curls closer to Keefe’s warmth.

One thing never changes, though- he and Keefe are always in the same class, and they always grade each other’s work. It’s more a decision than a teacher-mandated thing. Peer grading isn’t fun by any measure, but they can trust each other not to judge. And it’s nice, having a little note to look at before he goes home and has to explain to his father why he only got a 95 on the science test. (Keefe keeps all these notes in a box under his bed, ripping them out of tests and rereading them when he can’t sleep. He’s not quite sure why, but they help.) (There are quite a lot of notes, over the years.)

“What’s so funny?” Fitz grumbled; the action carried no heat either, but instead was somewhat endearing. Sophie, from where she had laid beside Keefe, turned to be on her side in order to look at both Keefe and Fitz better. “Nothing,” Keefe replied, a dopey smile on his face, “nothing at all.” “Well, do you guys wanna know something that I find kinda funny?” Fitz asked, his voice a lot quieter than before. His grip on Keefe’s hand had loosened slightly as he chose to stare up at the ceiling instead of his friends. “What is it?” Sophie asked, her head tilting slightly. Instead of speaking, Keefe clenched the pin in his hand so he wouldn’t lose it and threw his arms tightly around Fitz. He felt like something missing clicked into the right place when Fitz’s arms wound around his back.Eternalia, it had been far too long since he’d had a real Fitz Hug. (He’d decided that hugs from Fitz got their own category since they were just that nice when he was 11. Keefe still stood by that decision.)When he cracked his eyes open, he saw Sophie staring at them, trying to stifle the ginormous grin trying to overtake her face.
