God, Raelle hated the ocean. Squinting into the glaring sunlight blasting her retinas, her dry tongue snuck out to taste the ever-present salt on her chapped lips, the tip scraping across crevices and cracks that stung, always stung, and hinted at the bitter coppery tinge of whatever blood might be left inside her that hadn’t rotted out like the wood on the old ship she used to call home with her family before they scuttled it after… After her mama died and she left to heed the damn call. Rubbing the papery side of her face, calluses dragging along the darkened flesh, she trailed her hand up to pass over the tightly knit braids along the side of her skull. A few scraggly whisps had gotten loose, and she pressed them down. The locks were rough to the touch. Worn. Weathered. Just like the rest of her. Like the thick fraying ropes anchoring the mast overhead. No better than the black leather of her boots that protected her from the never-ending splash of brine methodically penetrating the sides of the ship and dousing the floor. As if on cue, a spittle of water slapped her cheek.
