The penalty for being caught in a homosexual act, or even suspected of it, is awful. Is it better to face it, or to control one’s own death and to die like a hero?·Based off a prompt by TealTears on AO3 (emokidhamlet on Tumblr), who suggested that Cap may have killed himself to avoid the persecution and punishment for being homosexual. It did hurt a little to write this, but it helped me face my own experiences of self-harm and suicide attempts, and forced me to recognise that I cannot be sure of becoming a ghost, and so should be very careful.I would also like to add that, while writing this, I had not seen any of series two of Ghosts (I add this note in case series two comes out before I finish publishing this). Edit: the Captain did not in fact serve in Africa. He has no Africa Star (a military medal awarded to soldiers who served in WWII Africa). I wrote this before doing my research properly.

Cordelia Edevane had always been an enigma to the other ghosts who haunted Button House, seeming to prefer the company of the living instead of the lingering spirits who had gathered over many centuries. So when Heather Button, the last inheritor of Button House, finally passes away due to old age, Cordelia is the only ghost who worries over the rundown house's fate while the rest bask in their new freedom. Months later, the arrival of new homeowners Mike and Alison Cooper rid Cordelia of her previous worries. However, her housemates don't take too kindly to the couple's plans to renovate Button House into a hotel, resulting in an unsuccessful haunting that ends with a near-death experience for Alison and her gaining the ability to perceive and converse with the dead. The ghosts, led by the Captain, plot to use Alison's new abilities to make the Coopers leave for good. But to their surprise, Cordelia is prepared to play mediator and keep them from leaving, even if it means foiling the mischief of her fellow ghosts. Meanwhile, an at-her-wits-end Alison may have found an unlikely ally keeping her sanity in check; Cordelia might be the only ghost of Button House she can just about tolerate.
