Exceptionally Exceptional
by CaffeinatedFlumadiddle
"Your mother made me make my own pie with her yesterday." He said, sitting up to glare. "What is it with your family? Why do none of you respect nobles?" He said and Merlin dropped the plate of food he was carrying. "...I hate you." He sighed, staring at his food bouncing on the ground with a loud clatter. "I should hire your mother as my servant. She wouldn't drop my food." He added with a fierce nod."My mother is here?" He asked and Arthur paused."You haven’t seen her?""No. Fuck. It’s finally happening." He whispered. Arthur stared, absolutely baffled. "She’s come to kill me." He explained and dashed towards the door to peer outside."What?" Arthur snorted. "Merlin. Your mother can be very firm, but she’s not the killing type. She is too softhearted for such things." He said and Merlin slammed the door shut, leaning against the wood as if barricading it."If you're not careful you'll be next."OrHunith occasionally visits Camelot. Ladders of Love
by TheCourtSorcerer
Arthur stared shamelessly as Merlin climbed up the wooden ladder to reach the roof of his mother’s house, and did…whatever he was doing up there. It wasn’t like anyone was around to see, anyhow. He didn’t know how long he’d spent standing there, ogling his manservant, before that voice he dreamt so often of reached his ears. “Arthur??”“Huh? What?” The prince blinked a few times, snapping out of his daze. He heard Merlin chuckle from his high placement.“I said, does it look too bulky from down there?” The sorcerer repeated himself.Arthur really had no idea what he was supposed to be looking at, as he’d been rather distracted and knew nothing about roof mending. Yet, he still shook his head. “No, it looks fine!”ORMerlin takes a summer trip to Ealdor to visit his mother! Arthur tags along. Many things happen on this trip—Arthur finds out farming is actually hard, Hunith enjoys mothering the Prince, Arthur pines helplessly for Merlin, Merlin becomes a health hazard for Arthur (the man swears his heart is going to give out if he sees Merlin shirtless in a garden, weeding again), and Hunith genuinely thinks they’ve already gotten together.

And Mother Knows Best
by Imagined
“I was just pointing out,” Gwaine says cheerfully, “that Merlin’s talents must clearly come from you. You raised him, and he’s now teaching our esteemed king in rational thought—”“Gwaine,” Arthur says, raising his eyebrows.“It’s not so much teaching as steering in the right direction,” Merlin says, and receives a tap to his head for that. He just jostles his shoulder against Arthur’s, and Arthur’s expression softens. “He’s not so bad, really.”Or: There’s a reason you shouldn’t keep secrets from your mother. During a visit to Ealdor, Gwaine happens to mention Merlin’s father. This shouldn’t have as many consequences as it does, and one by one, several truths come to light.

of Shaking Quills and Smudged Ink [a Midnight Affair]
by TheCourtSorcerer
With slow movements, cautious of the guards appointed outside his door, the dark-haired crown prince stood from his desk, carefully rolling the letter in his hands as he rose. He grabbed a ribbon from the corner of his desk, and tied it around the rolled parchment. Then, assuring its tightness was sufficient, he walked to the curtained window, socked feet quiet on the hard floor.A cough from outside his chamber’s doors had Merlin freezing in his tracks as he raised a hand to open his curtains. Shuffling from the guards had him holding his breath, anxious anticipation suffocating him.ORMerlin & Arthur are planning to marry in secret, but mothers are more perceptive than they seem.

Over the Cliff's Edge
by Ivy_Scribbles
“Merlin!” a voice rang out into the distance. “Merlin!” it repeated again, the distressed tone only increasing each time. Arthur had repeated his manservant’s name several times now and so far, he’d gotten no results. Safe to say, he was worrying his princely socks off. He firmly shook Merlin’s shoulder, begging for him to wake up on the inside, but on the outside, he was just shouting his name. “Merlin!” he yelled for the tenth time, the man who lay in front of him not responding.‘Well, of course he wouldn’t,’ the back of Arthur’s mind told him. ‘He’s fallen off a cliff for God’s sake.’OR Merlin falls off a cliff and Arthur learns that it's not the first time this has happened. So, Merlin tells Arthur a tale from when he was a boy.
