Why did Glorfindel return to Middle-earth? Maybe the Valar decided they needed a messenger. Maybe he felt he still had something to do there and begged them to let him return. Or maybe it went something like this... It's the early Second Age and Idril is worried about her grandsons. In the course of this she waylays new arrivals to Valinor, tries to find her footing with her own grandmother, schemes with Tuor, Finrod and Glorfindel, and finally sets a plan into motion.

After Turgon’s death, there was no heir left to the throne. Except, Idril told Galadriel, for Fingon’s son who had been fostered in secret in Gondolin. Maeglin would have protested this deception, if he had known about her plan before.

It's time for Maeglin to get reembodied! The only problem, of course, is that a good number of people don't trust him with freedom, so he has to be supervised by someone who isn't biased in his favor. Idril and Tuor volunteer, since no one knew they were dating him before. Once he apologizes for what he did, they can enjoy their time together.Or at least they could, if Maeglin didn't consider their relationship long since broken off, and its rekindling didn't look extremely suspicious to outside eyes.(Title from a Shakespeare sonnet again)

Idril says to Maeglin, "And how fare your stories today?"Maeglin does not break her gaze as so many do. At least, above else, he has the strength that her aunt had. “As they always do, cousin. Dancing across the sky, entombed in rhyme.”(Idril's son has been spending time with her cousin, lately. Perhaps nothing could change, or perhaps everything could.)

"So." Idril decides to put the conclusion she knows they have all arrived at in words. "We appear to have run out of heirs to the crown of the Noldor." Three AUs for the Noldor, the Sindar, the Vanyar... and the women who might have ruled them.
