Iroh insists they create a new life and identity in Ba Sing Se. Zuko wants nothing more than to bide his time until his next opportunity to return home, until he realizes ‘Lee’ can get away with things Zuko never could. Zuko dons the mantle of the Blue Spirit again only to lose his focus when the Avatar comes to the city. This time, however, his attention is drawn to the annoying Southern Tribe warrior.

It’s said that you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat animals. Zuko may be loud and stubborn and sharp but all the woodland creatures love him.

AU where Zuko realises early into his banishment that Ozai is an abusive bastard who sent him on a wild goose chase. Iroh turns their decommissioned warship into a floating tea shop, and Zuko settles down as a tea server onboard the Jasmine Dragon. And then, years later, the Avatar emerges from the iceberg. And then Aang decides that he wants Zuko, the first good firebender he’s met this century, to be his firebending teacher - even though Zuko wants nothing to do with him.Based on this tumblr post.

For his first thirteen years, Zuko was raised in a palace. And yet somehow, it's the three years outside the Fire Nation that seem to count more – at least to the palace staff, who act like he's been raised by fox-wolves.At first, this only annoys Zuko.Until he begins to think that the Fire Nation needs more than a formerly-banished prince.

It’s a beautiful day on the Jasmine Dragon, the sun is shining, and Zuko has a Bad Feeling about it. Or, Zuko’s casual treason is interrupted by the Avatar, who is a child and a Pain In The Ass.

Zuko finds them at the Western Air Temple, the first that they visit after his banishment. He doesn’t mean to, and he sure as hell doesn’t go looking for them, but he finds them anyway. He bolts out of the temple, past his uncle, past their camp, and runs until he reaches a forested meadow, where he drops to his knees and throws up everything he’d eaten that day. Or, alternately: Zuko discovers the truth about what happened to the Air Nomads, and also rediscovers an endangered species.

“I just wanted to introduce myself. Your uncle had told me his niece had been thinking of applying to work in the gardens, so I thought I would introduce myself.” Fire Lord Zuko was awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck and a slight blush crawled up his cheeks. Oh my Spirits, Hana thought. Our Fire Lord is adorable. Or,5 times the palace staff were protective over their Fire Lord because they all love him to death, and 1 time they had someone else do it.

[“Are you dead?” Are the first words that come out of Zuko’s mouth. Lu Ten winces. He’s barely adjusted to the idea himself, but he still wasn’t expecting Zuko to reach that conclusion so fast. He can’t lie to him.He nods.“I am.”“But you’re real.”“Yeah. Real dead.”He tries for a joke but Zuko bursts into tears instead.] Or,Lu Ten makes a promise, Lu Ten dies. Lu Ten comes back.

[Iroh looks awful. He’s definitely been crying and his face looks like it’s never known how to smile, and his whole posture is slumped over like he’s suddenly aged several decades. His eyes (gold, just like Zuko’s) are sharp, though, and filled with something hard and furious.“How could you have left him behind?” He drags out, voice rough and heavy and mad.]Or,What happens afterwards.

He wanders the Earth Kingdom, introduces himself as Zuko, a name that belongs to these peoples’ enemies, because there’s good among his nation, and he wants the world to know that. Because every day there are more reports of the Fire Nation claiming more land or another defenseless town in his father's- in Ozai’s name. And despite all the damage his soldiers are causing, he wants the other cultures to know. Wants people to know that the Fire Nation is suffering just as much as they are in this war, and that they are more than the face of the enemy. His people sport burns and tragedy just as they do, and if no one else is going to show that, then it’s up to him.

[“Snap your fingers at me one more time, and I’m taking them off,” Zuko snarls at him after being snapped at once too often. Zhao rubs a hand over his sideburns and eyes him. “Your uncle hasn’t taught you manners yet?” “Sorry,” he replies, not sorry at all, “Snap your fingers at me one more time and I’m taking them off, Admiral.” He sees Uncle’s warning stare and shuffles a pace backwards. He hates Zhao and Zhao hates him, and they both hate the stupid game they have to play of feigned politeness when really, they each want the other to drop dead where they stand.] Or, Zuko is tired of Zhao’s nonsense, an important talk about surrender is a long time coming, and the Siege of the North is an absolute mess.

[Iroh’s phone rings. He doesn’t recognize the number but he answers anyway. “Hello?” For a few moments all Iroh can hear is shallow, raggedy breathing on the other end of the line. Then finally, he can hear a hoarse, familiar voice that he hasn’t heard in years. “Uncle Iroh? I need your help. Can you...can you come pick me up?”] Or, Iroh wasn’t prepared for another child, but the universe hasn’t ever cared about that.

[Zuko is rocking. That’s the first sensation he feels upon awakening. It’s a familiar feeling, as is the texture of the knit blanket he’s curled up in, as is the quiet but constant hum of machinery, deep in the belly of the Jasmine Dragon....wait.Zuko bolts upright and flails, once, and falls out of bed with a hard clatter. It’s his bed that he’s been sleeping in for years, and definitely not the cell that he’s been rotting in for the last...he doesn’t know how long. He doesn’t know how he got here. He doesn’t remember.]Or, Zuko is not okay. But he can get better.

When Zuko dashes into the sitting room, it is with the same wide-eyed panic that he ran from Azula’s smoking hands when he was a child. Iroh bites down on a smile. Zuko looks the same, even now, a decade later with a scar blossomed over one side of his face, green and brown robes replacing the solitary reds of his childhood. His hair is puffed up around his face. He looks like a very frightened, very windswept turtle-dove. Zuko dives behind Iroh just as Aang breezes to a stop in the doorway. Five times Zuko hid behind Iroh, plus one time Zuko stood proudly in front of him.

It happens the second or third time they come across their wanted posters. Now, it’s never bothered her that she can’t see. You can’t miss something you’ve never had, afterall, and Toph’s never been without the simplicity of the black filling her vision. Besides, it’s not like she can’t see, she just does it differently.Toph sees with the earth, just like her earthbending masters. And the badermoles were excellent teachers. She can feel someone coming from miles away, can sense the slightest movement, can read people like a book, and all she had to do was be in contact with her element. But it doesn’t change the fact that she’ll never know what her friends look like. And it’s a silly thing to focus on in that moment, in the middle of a town where people want them dead, but the realization hits her hard.

As they travel, Sokka learns to collect stories. Not only do the stories give them more knowledge about the Earth Kingdom, which is beyond helpful because Aang really needs an earthbender, but they also inspire people to do good, even in the colonies. And, not that he’ll ever admit to it, Sokka loves all the stories and legends about the Blue Spirit. A swordsman in a mask, or so the stories say, whose silence is a symbol of safety and freedom.Wait.Oh, spirits.
