"But my greatest regrets have been as a father. And my biggest mistake was letting you go your whole life believing a lie." Jamie paused at that, finally looking back toward the man, and John took a deep breath, lifting his head and looking back at him. "I do love you, son." Jamie froze, stomach lurching as soon as his mind registered the words. "I'm sorry," John continued carefully, "that I made you feel like I didn't."

“Why’d you really bring me out here?” “Cause you’ve always treated me good. Like I ain’t a shit head little orphan boy that your daddy picked up by his scruff.” “Why would I treat you any other way than good, Rip?” He shrugs, still impossibly close. “Some folk’re mean just for the helluvit.” “I’m not,” Jamie whispered. “I know.”

The suspicion creeps in, a thick fog laying heavy over his mind. Kayce struggles against it for a moment, staring at his older brother. "Jamie," he prompts, slowly, cautiously, "where is he?" "Dead," Jamie rasps, and another flinch shudders through his shoulders, and then he's crying. Kayce doesn't waste any time scrambling over to him, not quite minding how rough he is as he grabs fistfuls of Jamie's suit jacket in his hands and pulls him out of the chair, onto the floor and into his arms.

He shifts a bit in his seat, feels the gun on his hip weigh a little heavier than it should. Can't stop thinking about the way Jamie's eyes had rested on it for just a moment, the horror in his gaze… Biting back a grimace, Kayce looks to John, almost for assistance. Of course, he gets none. John's eyes are focused on the road and his hands are tight around the wheel, but the way his eyes flick back and forth from the road to the mirror to look back at Jamie is enough indication that he wants to hear Jamie state the truth aloud more than Kayce does. To be honest, Kayce's almost content to just let it go, but there's a part of him that wants John to hear it out loud, too. He wants him to know what he's doing to his son.

"I love you, brother," Kayce murmurs as he turns to leave. Jamie has to keep his arms pinned to his sides so he doesn't reach forward and pull him into a hug, the faintest flicker of disappointment stirring in his chest until his brother's words register. "I love you," he offers back, and he means it. He means it with every fiber of his being, from the bottom of his fucking heart, he loves his brother. He's the only one that he's ever fucking loved.

Drabbles centered around Jamie. I usually include a quote from the fic in my summaries, but since these are... well, drabbles, that's a bit more difficult.

Jamie Dutton is a formidable figure in Montana politics. At 41, he is the handsome, 6'1" Harvard-educated Attorney General of Montana, a scion of the wealthiest, most influential family in the state. For months, he has worked with federal, state, and tribal partners to dismantle a sprawling human-trafficking network operating from the Pacific Northwest to the Mountain West, which targets women and girls from Indigenous communities. But as the joint task force moves to make its biggest arrest, the operation collapses in a catastrophic ambush. The fallout is devastating. Jamie survives, but with life-altering injuries that force him to rebuild nearly every part of his life while the public watches. With the support of John, Beth, Kayce, Rip, Thomas Rainwater, Mo Brings Plenty, and Governor Lynelle Perry, he fights his way back — physically, politically, and emotionally. But even as he rebuilds, one question refuses to let him go: who knew enough to betray the operation, and who was powerful enough to turn it into a massacre?

“Is there a reason you are calling me at five in the morning?” Kayce asks his brother.Kayce expected the usual response of ‘Your up anyway’ but that did not come. What he got in response was a shaky neverous breath from Jamie’s side of the line.“Jamie?” Kayce asks.“I’m a father.” Jamie blurts out randomly. But it’s softly spoken. Like the whipsers they shared in childhood. Like when Kayce had told Jamie and Lee simply one night, ‘I’m going to be a father’.TLDR: Christina dies in childbirth and Jamie is left to care for his son. Set pre-Season 3 with a lot of Canon divergence. The Dutton family is close and caring of eachother in this!
