Every year, on her birthday, he allows himself to dwell on Kirsten. Ten years after he last laid eyes on her, right after all of those unforgivable words tumbled out of his mouth, he truly wonders if she’s dead. If she is, she didn’t bother to haunt him like Frank did. He supposes that there’s other people she would have preferred to spend the time with. He’s different now. He wishes that their paths could have crossed later, when he was ready to be a f—whatever she needed him to be. He would have been less sharp with her. He would have danced with her more, and listened to her strange little stories. He would have tried to understand her. (or: Jeevan lives a life, and remembers.)
