There had been one night, and he remembers this only now, that had been like this. The pressure; the journey; the grave. It had been dark and he had arrived a little too late, the party having already begun to refill the new-old hole ere he had happened upon them. In the sliver of lantern light he had seen the fabric of the coffin, a flash of the copper plate they had engraved for him.

John Shaw Torrington had been dead for three days, and he had been alone.Alone, for seventy-two hours in the dark and the cold.Alone, and abandoned on a barren island covered in rocks and not much else, for four thousand and three hundred minutes, if he had done his mental divisions correctly. He didn’t have a pencil, nor paper. He couldn’t double-check.He had sat upon the top of his rocky grave, leaned up against the plank of his grave-marker, with his knees tucked up. Arms around his legs, a bony makeshift pillow to lean upon as he waited. He didn’t feel the biting chill of the wind, but wrapped around himself protectively, regardless.Still— he had watched on silently as his fellow crewmates lowered John Hartnell’s coffin into the ground.

“Good Christ,” Liam bellowed from the shoreline, as he executed another nearly perfect somersault, his twentieth or perhaps twenty-first in the last hour. “Someone tie that boy up, please?!”John fell out of the somersault with none of his usual grace and lay on the shale, surprisingly winded for somebody who could no longer breathe.

John’s favorite thing, every day, is coming back aboveground. Seeing Jack blink into the sunlight, eyes sparkling, coughing and coal-dusted but cheery in the fresh air. He carries the memories of Jack happy and exhausted close to his heart, like a locket of a sweetheart. Walks home at night with thoughts of that smile in his mind.
