The boy’s bottom lip trembled, and Celeste was alarmed to see that he was on the verge of tears. Then another moment passed, and he seemed to swallow this emotion, replacing it with anger. “Nothing,” he bit out, “I was chosen for Eben’s knight and ... was lost.” The Wars had first been established in a treaty several hundred years ago to join the two warring nations of Alabast and Eben in a final bid for peace. The Council of Elders were in charge of enforcing the treaty, which required the monarchs of Alabast and Eben to meet at a neutral location every five years and play a game of chess, the pieces of which were represented by children - both common and noble - from each of their realms. The winner of the game that year would be awarded their captured pieces. A cultural exchange, the Elders had called it, though more commonly it was understood that the children were to be hostages for peace.

In a world of board games, the battle never stops raging on, not for the Chess Pieces. The Angel of Death, the Black Knight herself, Vespera, races through the battlefield on the back of her noble steed, Raven. She firmly grasps her sword, slashing through pawns with ruthless efficiency. However, she makes a near-fatal blunder. After being shot with an arrow from a white rook, both her and her horse are losing blood, not a healer in sight. But as her vision blurs from blood loss, she sees her. She looks like an angel herself, white robes and an almost ethereal glow to her as she approaches. A gentle, yet firm hand removes the arrow. A sweet, lilting voice speaks incantations Vespera doesn't recognize, though her heart skips a beat nonetheless. "Rest," that sweet voice gently commands. As the knight's consciousness fades away into the comforting embrace of darkness, she pledges herself to find this sweet angel once more

The White bishop and the black knight always knew they were destined to be enemies. From the colour of their factions to their perspectives in life and their views during debates. In school, they avoid eachother like the plague, and their fans do the same as well. So, what would happen if one day an accident happens that brings them closer than they ever thought possible?*I'm sorry, we're bored and in school. Blame Greek education for this*
