The world spun as he took in the date before him. Perhaps this was a nightmare of some sort? Or a hallucination? The brief said they weren’t entirely sure what protections the device had on it. Forcing him to relive the assault on Lasan certainly would be a fitting way to neutralize him. Still, that didn’t…that idea didn’t seem right. This felt all too real.

“Any idea what your fool husband was doing?” “No, he was just out for a walk, when he didn’t come home or answer a text comm I called and he didn’t answer that either. I’ve been following his boot prints. He was going along the path but then suddenly headed into the trees.” When Kallus doesn't return from his evening walk one night, Zeb ends up having to rope some local friends in for a quick rescue mission. It doesn't take long to find him, but there's a little surprise in store...

“Gar cuyir kotir, ba’vodu Zeb.” Kasi’s sweet voice is soothing to the Lasat warrior, despite the fact that he doesn’t know a word that she’s saying. “Or'atu kotir than ni.”

The mewling cry wafting up from Kallus' feet brought him up short. Something golden-brown and covered with downy fur lay bundled on their doorstep. He set the bo-rifle aside and crouched down, nudging the blanket aside to reveal a tiny kit. Kallus’ eyes darted around, searching for the kit’s mother, but she seemed to have disappeared. He scooped the kit into his arms and closed the door.‘Well… now what?’ he whispered.

Kallus’ face took on a rather sickly hue, and he looked as though he was going to puke at any second. ‘Just how unflattering are we talking about?’Zeb’s hand tightened around the back of his neck. ‘Do ya remember the word Rex an’ Wollfe used to describe Palpatine?’Kallus’ eyes widened, and his mouth fell open. That word had made even Han Solo blush and Chewbacca’s fur stand on end. And Han Solo’s vocabulary overflowed with the profanities and epithets of dozens of worlds and languages. As he dragged a hand down his face, he muttered, ‘Kriff me. How much trouble am I in?’Zeb propped his fists on his hips and stared at the sky. ‘Ya mind groveling? In public?’

Pulling back the bed covers, he found himself staring at a mound of purple fur striped with darker purple lines thru it. His mind must be pulling tricks, he would need to put this medication on his ‘Do not take again under any circumstances’ the effects from it completely destroying all of his honed and trained ISB skills as he continued to dumbly stare at the fluff laying in his bed. It looked much softer than Garazeb Orrelios' fur, and had his body been more his own, maybe he’d have reached out to touch it...Dropping the covers and stepping back to the window Kallus watched as the lump on his bed moved in time with the coughing noise. As it slowed, a pitiful mew could be heard. A pained whine, a pause, a sniff of the air, then followed by gasps as the lump thrashed about pulling the covers off from over them. What he saw next confused his drugged brain even further.Covered in a sheen of sweat, blue skin a shade purple from fever, head tendrils knotted, wearing scavenged clothing covering most of her skin, was an adolescent Quokki, a small Lasat Kit pulling itself up-on the Quokki’s pant leg to a seated position…. The glare and growling he would expect, but the viroblade being brandished at him he did not.

Zeb glanced down at the datapad in his hand to reassure himself the message was still there. ‘Do ya know where ya want to go now that it’s all over?’Kallus turned onto his side, mindful of the trailing tubes in his arm. ‘I haven’t the faintest idea. I haven’t thought about it, if we’re being completely honest.’ He snorted with a sardonic laugh. ‘I lived on Imperial starships or Imperial bases from the age of fourteen until I defected for good. Then Rebel bases and Rebel starships… It isn’t as though I have a home to return to. I wouldn’t know my parents if they stood in front of me. They’re probably dead by now.’ He rolled the edge of the blanket between his thumb and forefinger. ‘Perhaps we can find some Mid Rim city where no one will look twice at us.’Zeb set the datapad aside, the message from Chava glowing on its screen. ‘Come home with me.’
