Tobias is getting tired of lying to his mom about the war with the Yeerks and the powers that he and his friends were given to fight it, but what matters more right now are the eerie dreams about the ocean that he can’t shake-off. He’s not the only one having dreams, and when it turns out those visions are really a cry for help the Animorphs have to leave the safety of dry land and take the plunge to rescue what may be the last remaining free Andalite on Earth. But can they do it without giving all their secrets away?

Aliens are real, just like Tobias's crazy mother has always claimed. Only there are more kinds of aliens out there than the ones that Loren has spent so many years trying to capture in swirls of blue paint and kind green eyes, and the Yeerks are a lot nastier than the Andalites. Only five kids stand between our planet and total enslavement...but they aren't the only ones having problems. For Melissa Chapman, the evils that the Yeerks perpetrate are a lot more personal, and a lot harder to fight against -- and her friends can't even risk telling her that they're on her side.

When the Ellimist took Elfangor away to resume the war against the Yeerks, he took Loren's memories too. But some things cannot be forgotten, not completely, not ever. How would the war change for the Animorphs if the first human to ever meet an Andalite was on their side, too? How much does the heart remember when the head forgets...and how much of a difference would those memories make in Earth's fight for freedom?

You never fought in a war, not really; you were lost in the peripherals; you watched it from the sidelines; it surrounded you. You’re with your husband the first time he kills and he’s shaking, he’s lost; you’re not with your son but you see it bearing down on him, suffocating him.

Elfangor hung his head, cushioning it onto her bare shoulder, and tossed the shirt onto their shared mattress. “Human eyesight is far less superior than an Andalites’.”“Yes, yes.” Loren giggled into his neck and threaded her fingers through his short hair. “Woe is me, who must suffer in an inferior body, and all that.” Elfangor’s frown deepened, and he didn’t even know it could do that, before he swept one arm under her upper thighs, and the other around her back and under her armpits. He tried to to pick her up off the ground and twirl them gracefully onto their bed.He tried.
