This story draws on the historical tradition of female seamen who served disguised as men, and the folk songs that sprang up around them. Most of the songs involve the maiden going off to search for her lover and end with her either being unmasked or choosing to abandon her disguise when she finds her man. The reality was different. These women served because they wished to, and for every one we have a record of, there were undoubtedly many others who were not discovered, and so never made their way into the pages of history. I offer you Sarah Woods as an example of one who was successful.
