Monday, May 25, 1970. Ponyboy's got plans to ditch Tulsa. He's convinced there's nothing here for him but a past he can't escape and endlessly being asked what he wants to do with his life. He doesn't know where he's going, but he does know he's gonna drive 'til the money runs out. Right before he plans to leave, he meets Randy again for the first time in years. While a little awkward at first, they realize they're more similar than they thought. Without much thinking, they decide to rush out of town together.But can you even really run away from your past?

Ponyboy Curtis hadn’t been to a bar mitzvah once in his life. Sure he grew up celebrating Hanukkah every year they could afford it. Or his mother dressing him in the nicest button up shirt he owned, only to have him zoning out during Shabbat on Soda’s shoulder every Saturday morning. Heard about other kids around town and how big and fancy their bar mitzvah were. Pretty sure one kid even got a car for three years down the road. But he still had never been to one. Not until Randy Adderson practically begged him too.

The slamming of the synagogue door was loud enough it made both Randy and Pony jump and look back. Neither of them knew who or what they were looking for, just that they were looking not to get caught. It was Ponyboy’s eighteenth birthday and Randy had kept his promise, more or less. Picking Pony up from his house a couple hours ago in a crappy grey van he had traded in his blue mustang for about a year ago. Three bottles of the best whiskey, bourbon, and white wine that he could get his hands on resting on the floor of his passenger seat. The back door to the synagogue that Randy happened to know was unlocked. Tipsy heads and excited voices echoing through the empty midnight halls. ‘Mazel tov, Ponyboy’. ‘Thank you, Randy’.

“Are– are you– uh –a virgin?”The words slur due to the alcohol mixed into his system, smoke coming out his mouth.Randy doesn't know if that was too weird. He thought they were comfortable, but maybe he’s just getting attached to the only person who seems to really understand him, even if he is a greaser.“Yeah,” The younger laughs a bit, smiling.Randy joined in, the alcohol and smoke making everything unnecessarily funny.“Good, yeah, that's– that's a good thing.” He says, which is an odd thing to say for someone like him. Randy continues, “It sucks.”.---Aka Randy talks about how he hates sex and Pony agrees, Randy really needed someone to talk to but isn't sure why that someone happens to be a greaser that he relates to so much.
