Paws for Thought
by xmoomzix
I know the title is very cliche but it's all I could come up with. This is the result of a writing prompt on tumblr. Sherlock opens up to John about Redbeard, exposing more the heart behind the great mind. John's heart breaks for Sherlock but he thinks he knows just what to do to ease the pain. A heart melting end, two besotted fools.

Sherlock sadly reminisces about his childhood dog one night, and a week later, John surprises him with a fluffy red creature who also fits the name.

Spoilers for His Last Vow. They find their parents leaning against the counter with a dog sat at their feet. It has silky reddish-brown fur and leans against Daddy Holmes’ leg, tongue happily lolling out to the side.

"So this is the end, then. Oh, I'm not afraid to die. I am ill. I am old. My hour has come and I regret nothing. It's the boys I worry about..." A portrait of the Holmes family (especially Mycroft) through Redbeard's POV, on the last day of his life.

"The Adventure of The Gloria Scott" may hold some answers about Redbeard. A meta in which I argue that Redbeard was indeed a dog.

Several “canonical” sources beyond Sherlock itself make me believe we haven’t seen Redbeard’s true significance yet. This gives me hope that, in terms of character development and narrative completeness, HLV is planned as a comma rather than a full stop.

Redbeard and the East Wind
by MissingTales
„Nothing made me. I made me. Redbeard?“ (Sherlock Holmes, The Abominable Bride)When they were boys, Mycroft would tell his younger brother stories about the East Wind and the mighty pirate Redbeard, but the fairy tales of a highly functioning sociopath were never to include heroes or fairies. However, they defined what Sherlock became in the end.[Excerpt]“Don't go, Mycroft!”His young, scared voice halted Mycroft's steps as he tried to leave the room. Now, Mycroft looked down on his brother, with his curly, barely kempt hair and tears already forming in the boy's wide eyes.“What have I told you about emotions, brother mine?” he asked, sighing softly at his stupid, slow little brother.
