As he fought desperately every day for a little more time, would it even matter if he could? As the days became years became decades, as his Earthbound rat identity took over completely, would it even matter that he'd ever been anything before he was Ripred? And once he'd finally come to terms with his new life, what, do you suppose, would happen if a hateful relic of that past was brought forth into the light?
