At least he thought he had until Jev insisted on pulling him and Andre into The Sky Full Of Stars, a queer Emporium, with him on their road trip, and he had seen it. He had seen the badge that said they/them, and it felt like his soul was finally at peace. It made sense. It felt like a calling. It felt like coming home. Or Sam finds that sometimes it takes until your 30’s till you find just who you really are, and there is no shame in that.

Occasionally, Jean-Eric stays over in Sam's hotel room. He stays because his own hotel is two blocks over and it’s three in the morning, because he drank too much at the after-party and left his stupid expensive jacket behind in the back of the cab (Sam offers to lend him one of his and of course it’s a joke that they both smile through - not laugh, because Jean-Eric doesn't ever seem to do that anymore - but only half a joke really).

Sam doesn't need to look for Robin because he knows exactly where he is. Sam likes his post on Instagram as soon as he can, as soon as he gets out of the car, gets briefed and sent off to relax, lounging in the garage and knowing that his own race wouldn't get better. Sends a quick message, makes sure Robin is okay. "Med cleared me, all good", and Sam exhales. He knows Robin has the keys to his motorhome, so by the time the race is done and his teammate drags the car home, Sam is ready to bolt. He wants to see the podium, wants to cheer for Antonio and his win, wants to help the mechanics pack. He needs to know Robin is fine, though, needs to be there.
