Resolve or Not

by highlyrelevantnumber (Leonora_Acker)

"Will you be dropping by the precinct?" asked Mariam, her brows furrowed in concern for their friend and neighbor.Sarah sighed again. "Just to pick Rex up. I'm still on leave.""Okay." Mariam knew when to press and when not to. Sarah was grateful for that. "We'll, of course, thank you and Rex with a steak dinner party. Things would be a lot different for the worse hadn't you two been there when I collapsed.""It was all Rex," said Sarah, smiling with her eyes. "He knew something was up as he stepped into the house. I just made sure help was on the way.""I owe you," said Sam. "A favor. You call it, I do it.""Sam, please," said Sarah gently, "we've had this conversation before. You and Mariam have Valerie now." ((For the prompt “collapse”.Or, attempting to explain why Rex was with Mark No-last-name in the scene on the beach.))

For Lack of a Better Idea

by highlyrelevantnumber (Leonora_Acker)

Sam Joseph was at a crossroads. He'd found Charlie Hudson, but the joy and relief he felt at that was tamped down by fear. He was currently sitting by Charlie's bed in a CIA safehouse in Latin America. (For the prompt “memory loss”.)

With or Without

by highlyrelevantnumber (Leonora_Acker)

The father-to-be, a remarkable knight and farmland owner, preferred to stay in a corner of the living room, alight with the glow of the fireplace, to mull over things in the relative quiet. The staff let him be, “poor first-time dad”. Only Mrs Patridge seemed to be seeing through his pensiveness and introspection. She poured a cup of tea for Sam, even though he hadn't asked for it."Now, Sir Samuel," said Mrs Patridge, steaming golden tea pouring delicately in the porcelain cup, "that is no way to welcome a child, all withdrawn and sulking." (For the prompt “wish you were here”.)

Esteemed Visitor

by highlyrelevantnumber (Leonora_Acker)

Sam wasn't the oldest of Liam and Clara Grace's four sons. He also had spent many years in foreign countries as a diplomat (that was his official job, at least). Because of his service to the Crown during those years, Sam had been selected to serve as a knight in the Order of the Most Noble Knights of the Kingdom, under the legendary–and equally feared–Artemis Aphrodite Procter. While his brothers were known to the local communities for their business ventures and their presence in high society, Sam was in many ways a newcomer. Plus, he didn't really think of himself as high society. (For the prompts “places to go” and “fairytale AU”.)

The Treatment You Get

by highlyrelevantnumber (Leonora_Acker)

Natalie turned towards her window. Sam guessed she was suppressing a scoff. She avoided his gaze. He'd known he'd have to deal with the metaphorical elephant in the room since offering to take Natalie home from Bianca's. Natalie had been giving him the cold shoulder all afternoon, but he assumed she hadn't permitted herself to be so overt with Bianca there. Bianca–it was just like her to drop them into a situation and let them claw their way out of it or tear each other up. Sam was mostly to blame for that by letting the relationship drag and drag and, then, one day cutting it off. He had confused Natalie. (For the prompts “shoulder” and “disdain”.)

Proposal of Marriage

by highlyrelevantnumber (Leonora_Acker)

He was trying to steel himself for the onslaught of mildly invasive questions Bianca was no doubt putting in order in her mind. Fair enough–asking a childhood friend to marry you simply because marriage was unavoidable anyway qualified as bizarre behavior. It wasn't like Sam had ever met his suggested bride-to-be. (For the prompt “attraction”.)

Life Finds a Way

by highlyrelevantnumber (Leonora_Acker)

Sam was driving Bianca and himself back after work. The drive back today was special, though. It was early afternoon, and they'd be stopping by the maternity clinic to also take Natalie and little Owen back with them in Sam's royal blue Acura."You're sure you don't mind?" Sam asked Bianca again, briefly taking his eyes from the highway. She smiled. "Of course I don't mind. You're a dad. That's still hard to believe, but here you are, with your little family." (For the prompt “highway”.)

Clutter

by highlyrelevantnumber (Leonora_Acker)

Procter turned around from setting down her load and pointed a finger at Bianca, her voice tense."Lileyman, you sneaky little thing–do you know about this?"Bianca found that before getting mad at Artemis one should at least attempt to verify the facts. Artemis was going off about something or other at pretty regular intervals, so Bianca had resolved to mostly letting things slide. "About what, Artemis?" she asked calmly.Procter ran a hand through her curly mane of shoulder-length black hair. The hand came to rest on her forehead. "About this–how shall I put it–accidental marriage...""Hey," Sam sprang to his defense, "will you, at least, listen to me?" (For the prompts “pack” and “accidental marriage”.)

Sam lightly took a hold of her wrist to stop her. "Hey," he said softly, "what's on your mind?"Bianca looked at him head-on. "Frankly, Sam, it's you. What happened? Was she that good an actress, or were you that desperate? Neither means that you're a failure, but I went against the terms of my consultancy taking her on. Not to mention, I could have missed."Sam smiled kindly. "You didn't miss, though."Bianca scoffed. "Multiple stabs and one emergency surgery later and you're still a charmer.""You know, I try my best. As for your question, I was adrift for a long time. I still haven't found my footing." (For the prompts “buckle up” and “survive”.)

by highlyrelevantnumber (Leonora_Acker)

Sam yawned and took a big gulp of coffee. "The Chief is my copilot today," he said, rubbing a hand over both his eyes. They were bloodshot, dark circles like raccoon eye patches."What happened to you?" asked Bianca, concerned."Nothing happened to him," Procter beat Sam to the punch. "Want to tell her, Jaggers?""Yeah," he answered tiredly, a smile shining on his face. "Natalie gave birth last night." (For the prompts “[blank] is my copilot” and “poetic”.)

No Time for Coffee

by highlyrelevantnumber (Leonora_Acker)

Sam needed coffee–badly. His and Natalie's four-year-old son, Owen, was not going to let him have it this morning, though. About a week ago, there'd been a shift in the family dynamics, and Owen had noticed that. The Chief had always told Sam that his son took after him in all ways that mattered–oh, well. Natalie had been staying in bed more in the past week, which left Sam to get Owen dressed, fed, and ready for preschool. (For the prompt “pit stop”.)

"I think you're forgetting this is my safehouse, Joseph." They were past the stage where they addressed each other by surname, but he knew her enough to know Bianca was a stickler for the rules. "Besides," she continued, "officially, you're in Minnesota catching a breather from desk duties with your family.""I'm not here," agreed Sam, fighting the urge to tease her with a lopsided grin."I'm serious," said Bianca. "If you need to be affectionate with Mariam, the time will come.""For a second there, I'd thought you'd say not to turn the safehouse into a crime scene." ((For the Angstpril prompt “I trusted you”.For the Fluff Bingo prompts “kiss on the cheek”, “devious smile”, and “You're the best!”.))

She brought him tea, set down two forks beside the pan, and turned around again to get the necessary items to serve the cake. Sam had already cut into it with his fork."We'll eat from the pan?" asked Bianca.Sam had a look akin to having been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. "I'm sorry. I totally forgot it's your cake."Bianca sat back down at the kitchen island and took her own fork in her hand. She cut into the other side of the cake.

Give Her the Word that We Are Over

by highlyrelevantnumber (Leonora_Acker)

Sam was sitting in the hospital chair, softly breathing in the sterile interior, head in his hands. Mostly he asked himself how he could not have seen it. Bianca laid a hand on his shoulder, and he looked up. She had brought him a small plastic cup of water from the water cooler sitting against the opposite wall. He drank it all and then crushed the plastic cup in his hands. Bianca sat down next to him, her hand on his shoulder again."What are you thinking?" she asked him quietly. His response was a choked laugh. "That I'm an idiot," he whispered, running a hand over his face. He looked down at his white shirt, stained with Mel's blood, and huffed."Hey," said Bianca, taking his hand in hers, "it's not all bad.""No," he replied, "it's just mostly bad."
