Rosy-Fingered Selene
by inabathrobe (aphilologicalbatman)
They say, then and later, that madness and magic come in the month of Boedromion. The sea cooks and boils. The air singes and curls. In the nights, gods walk the earth beside men. The fair-haired goddess, laughter-loving Aphrodite, comes to her then, sitting in the courtyard, weaving with her hands as her mind flies free.

so tell me why my gods look like you
by wwdittardis
“Doctor, where and when exactly did we land?”“Good question. Give me a moment,” she replied. The Doctor sunk her head into the water enough to get mouthful of it. She swished it around her mouth, and then swallowed it with a gulp. “Around 610 BC. A Greek island, I think? Not sure which one, though,” she explained, and then grimaced, sticking her tongue out in disgust. “I really shouldn’t have swallowed that. Salt water doesn’t taste good.”“What, and Norwegian soil does?” Yaz teased. “And hang on – did you say 610 BC? We’re a long way from home, then,”“I’ll get you back, Yaz,” the Doctor stated. ORThe TARDIS crashes and leaves Yaz and the Doctor stranded in ancient Greece, and who do they run into and team up with other than famous poet Sappho! (which is DEFINITELY a coincidence and not at all because of Yaz's recent obsession with said poet) [no knowledge of Sappho or ancient Greece is required to enjoy this fic!!]

The Third Aphrodite
by Mercurie
It's said that Sappho killed herself by jumping off a cliff when she failed to win the heart of the beautiful ferryman Phaon. This tale has the story backwards, for in fact Sappho died not at the end of her life, but at the beginning.

I was inspired to write this after the hoopla regarding the spoilers of Season Four and recent comments the stars and the powers that be (TPTB) made in regard to subtext. They were going to do a Sappho ep but they didn't know how to keep the subtext 'sub' but I had an idea. However, but this is not that idea. :) I ended up penning this story instead. Maybe someday I'll write that.

When hobbits first collected these shreds of lyrics, from various sources, including love-notes in a shared school-book, we had only the loosest idea what the original context to these poems was. For example, we did retain the memory that Sapphire and her lovers were all of the feminine type of the Mannish race. In the Shire, hobbit-lasses who prefer to court lasses call themselves 'Sapphic' to this day.Yet some lines of some songs had only a single word legible word, and there was only the vaguest idea of what might have surrounded it. Reconstruction was impossible, so the hobbit scholar (a Took, we think) who collected them rarely attempted to re-create the original lyrics. Instead, she formed them into new poems, which took on their own meanings; their own lives. Some of them were integrated into Shire-speak as idioms with at most a trace of the original intent. But they live on, in this strange re-birth.
