This was written for the Tolkien Challenge on Instagram and the prompt was Shadowfax. Gandalf came to Rohan after escaping Orthanc, dressed as a beggar. Theoden said he could choose any horse to leave on, as long as he left by that day. Gandalf chased Shadowfax for two days and over 20 miles in order to overtake him. But when he did finally catch him, Shadowfax was so fast that he ran faster than the Black Riders, and they got to Weathertop even before Frodo did. Without the help of Shadowfax, Frodo may have died with his friends in the wilderness. I like to think Shadowfax wanted to be a stubborn so and so, sending Gandalf on a merry dance: I hope I did his character justice!

I wrote this as a gag gift for my friend Caitlin. We were coming up with awful ships and Gandalf/Shadowfax (that white horse he whistles for and rides-no pun intended-places) was one of those ships. Technically that makes this her fault... A big thank you to my dad for helping me write this.

A story set in Rohan during the time of Thengel. Features Thengel, Theoden, Galmod, an OMC, and a dark haired northerner of their acquaintance. And, not least, a great many horses, including Shadowfax and Snowmane. Fairly lighthearted with one or two serious notes regarding loss and choices. Winner of the Parma award for best story about humans
