Comfort and Joy

by Gigi_Sinclair

"Val doesn't need a break from Christmas cooking. She’s about to say so when Dale goes on, in a rush like he’s desperate to get it out, 'Mum, I’m living with somebody.''That’s wonderful!' It is. Dale’s almost forty, and Val isn’t getting any younger, either. She’s not exactly facing down death yet, but it would make her happy to see that he’s being properly looked after before she goes. 'What’s her name?'She’s met with silence, and Val knows. If she's honest with herself, she’s known since he was a boy. 'He’s called Tim,' Dale says quietly, after what feels like hours."
