Zuko’s used to feeling unsafe. Zuko is also used to sleeping like shit. Somehow, he’s never considered that these things are connected. Or, Zuko figures out where he stands with Toph and almost immediately falls asleep on her.

Toph says, “It’s never nice when someone tries to make you feel small. Especially when they’re grown adults who should know better.” Zuko blows out a breath. “Yeah. It’s--yeah.” (Toph and Zuko, protecting each other at cross-national balls.)

"Okay, Zuko. Lie to me." Toph's feet are spared; Zuko accidentally has his first sleepover. Canon divergence from "The Western Air Temple."

[“Draw a portrait, Sparky,” she says, “It’ll last longer.”Zuko does not draw a portrait. Zuko gets up and disappears to wherever he’s been sleeping (alone and far away, like he’s hiding, even though sound carries too well in this temple for him to keep his screaming nightmares to himself), and Toph thinks for a moment that she’s run him off. She hasn’t run him off.Zuko returns in a matter of minutes, holding what’s clearly a book in his hands.“Hasn’t…” he begins, anxious without fail every time he brings attention to himself, “Hasn’t anyone ever read to you?”]Or,Toph thinks books are stupid. Zuko disagrees.

“So, to put this together,” Toph says to Aang in a highly-measured tone that she didn’t know she even had the capacity for. “You were sparring, you had Zuko on the ground, and you held flames close to his, you know, scarred face?”

In which Zuko's first few days in the Beifong household are interesting to everyone involved, but none more so than to Zuko himself. (or, zuko learns to adjust and learns toph's just as big a liar as he is)

After his ill-fated Agni Kai, Zuko is cast out of the Fire Nation without even so much as a hope of returning. Dumped on Earth Kingdom shores, he's forced to come to terms with the fact that his father likely wants him dead- and that maybe the Fire Nation was never that great to begin with. That's the painful part. The weird part? The weird part is breaking into a nobleman's manor in order to steal food, getting caught and then being hired to protect (babysit) said nobleman's blind daughter. Then again... maybe it's exactly what he needs right now. (or, toph never got her field trip so now she gets to hog zuko for three whole years)

Toph marks her first birthday since Li came into her life, which to her, is a gift enough already. Zuko marks his first birthday since his exile with the fevered realization that maybe family has found him. (or, toph and zuko grow a year older and maybe just a little wiser)

It's time for Earth Rumble Five, and Toph Beifong has one mission- to prove that she really is the greatest earthbender in the world. Zuko's just along for the ride.

Zuko's never been a liar. That's always been Azula's thing. But now that he's living in enemy territory, he literally has no choice- and the guilt is starting to get to him. Toph's never had a choice when it comes to acting- she has to, because the girl her parents think she is doesn't exist. She doesn't feel guilty about it at all, not really. (or, sometimes a liar and an actor are exactly what the other needs)

Before, Lao Beifong would have never considered bringing Toph with him to Ba Sing Se. It just wasn't safe. It turned out your daughter having her own personal bodyguard changed things. (or, long feng gets a headache)

The Avatar and his friends accept Zuko's offer to be their prisoner, but destinies are not so easily changed.

What happens in the underground fight pit, doesn't always necessarily stay in the underground fight pit. (in which Zuko and Toph spar with each other, go watch a Rumble, have their first fight, and figure out friendship on the way.)

And again, she couldn’t help but connect that story she heard when she was eight to this adversary. She couldn’t help but wonder what his face looked like or if he could see out of his scarred eye. And she was still confused over why he had joined his sister overthrow Ba Sing Se when he was supposed to be banished from his nation. She didn’t understand why he still fought for the Fire Nation’s side. So when the infamous Angry Freak With a Ponytail showed up on their doorstep to, of all things, teach Aang firebending, Toph just thought ‘so, you came to your senses, Prince Ponytail?’(or, Toph knows how Zuko got his scar)

Toph decides she needs to know who in the gaang is hot. This leads to quite a bit of trouble for Sokka.
