In HoMe XI, The War of the Jewels, Tolkien wrote the following of the tale of the Awakening of the Elves by Cuiviénen,: "Actually written (in style and simple notions) to be a surviving Elvish 'fairytale' or child s tale, mingled with counting-lore." Clearly, this leaves room for alternative origin stories. This sequel of sorts to "Ulmo's Wife" is one. Written for Grey Gazania's birthday.

The Valar have a plan to get a Silmaril back to Aman, or rather Ulmo has a plan and the other Valar are just sort of letting him carry on without being interested enough to get involved themselves. However, that plan's hit a bit of a snag. Featuring: a persistent and obsessed Eärendil, an equally persistent and obsessed Elwing, and three sneaky Ainur.

The sea is green and blue and alive, just everything he is not, and never will be again. To him it is comfort and reassurance – a possibility; and although he is alone, Maglor knows he is not. He had known for awhile that the shallow waters, with its green eyes and crown of foam, were watching him.

'The sound of water trickles into the unlikeliest of places, takes him with it; and so he goes, seeing through the eyes of fish, dark and silver-glimmering, turning colors with the many-armed octopus, moving into himself, then dispersing like the coil of wave, changing with every new thing he encounters. Easily lost in the many-voiced song of the currents for an Age or so, not so much ruling but rule, receding with the tide at the first call of horned Moon.'-In which Ulmo holds very little solid form at all.-A little lovesong to the Sea.
