The Baron thought Viksis was mocking him.“No, she loved me very much. That was why she named me Viksis, after my sire.”

“Some things are need to know,” Braldos said and fired the wire rifle several times in quick succession, moving the gun as she did, hitting each target. At this distance no one cared about a bulls-eye but just hitting the target was impressive. She lowered the rifle and slung it back up on her back. “And you’re not need to know, Quartermaster. Now if I’ve satisfied your curiosity I’ll be going.” She turned and left. She felt Yaris watching her go but he didn’t follow her this time.

Inter-house raids weren’t uncommon. A larger crew dealing with a smaller one, taking some of their members, their supplies, and getting lost. Safer than attacking a human settlement that might be protected by a Lightbearer. The bigger crew’s Captain might even have the Captain killed to cut back on competition for higher titles, Baron positions that came up. Preksik had figured his crew was too small to gain any attention, him too young a Captain to be noteworthy.

The House Home was the seat of power for House Devils. It was located far enough away from House Kings’ claimed starport to the east to not be in contention for territory but close enough that if needed the Kells could easily talk face to face. It was in the underground of an old human city, comprised of long branching tunnels and well fortified exits. Skiffs were expected to land on top of old skyscrapers to keep them out of the way of easy human attacks and sabotage. Ketches decorated the sky in atmosphere and low orbit, dominating the view and letting every human or Lightbearer know this place was one of danger.

It was a strange creature. Not like the ones he’d seen before with long fur the color of the autumn leaves, brilliantly orange. It had a round face and big furry cheeks with pert triangular ears and whiskers sticking off its face and above its eyes. It was four legged with fur covered feet and was long and agile looking with a fat fluffy tail. It was... cute. And soft. Well he couldn't eat it now.
