Being so close in her work with the humans, La Muerte has always had some assumptions about how marriage is supposed to work. She also has a lot of pent-up maternal instinct and no one on which to spend it. When she uses the word "lacking" in a conversation with Xibalba, he makes it his mission to give her the family she wants. The problem is, the two of them can't have children on their own. So it's up to him to find...another solution.

It's been a few weeks since Xibalba surprised La Muerte with the "gift" of a baby. During that time, he's considered the child (Amaris) as a precious item that belongs to his wife. As such, and knowing how vulnerable and defenseless babies are, he's constantly terrified that it--the baby--is going to get broken or damaged somehow, which leads him to be incredibly anxious any time he's around it. This instance gives us some insight as to his thought process and whether or not his feelings about it will ever change.

Due to Xibalba's exile, he hasn't seen or spoken to La Muerte in hundreds of years. That probably explains why he's dreaming of the time before their falling-out, when he could hold her whenever he wanted. But it's possible there's more to it than harmless reminiscence.

This story starts at the beginning of La Muerte and Xibalba's relationship, from their first meeting onward. The playful (and sometimes not so playful) arguments they have today are nothing compared to how they clashed when they first met; it will take them centuries to figure out exactly what their relationship is. Not only do they have to get past La Muerte's temper and Xibalba's inadvertent condescension, but their conflicting views on human nature will come between them on more than one occasion. We'll also see why and how the Afterlife comes to be, and the part it plays in bringing them together.
