Yuna's inner monologue in Besaid temple. Her own life, or Spira's hope?

by robinjay_bartley
Yuna is twenty-something, over-educated, and stuck editing other people's books in the shadow of her mother's legendary career. She has a half-finished underwater romance novel, a complicated relationship with her one-eyed, cane-wielding historian mother, and a very firm plan to stay home. Then the Guardian of the Temple sends her a letter. Somewhere between a diplomatic mission, an act of colonial guilt, and a mother's strange parting gift, Yuna finds herself sailing to a jungle island her ancestors once destroyed, with a glowing hatchet she has no idea how to use, a spellcaster who burned her eyes out for a boy, and the angriest woman she has ever met. The Fertile Heart needs to go home. So does Yuna. Neither journey is going to be straightforward. A historical fantasy about legacy, loneliness, and what you find when you stop reading other people's stories long enough to live your own.

Yuna’s entire body aches, and it would appear that her instincts were right— Rozanov is small, and he’s vulnerable, and he’s tired, and he needed somewhere safe to rest. And Yuna can’t help the weird sense that she’s honoured— her home was somewhere for Rozanov to go, even if she and David knew nothing about any of it, even if they still don’t, Shane knew it would be safe for Rozanov here. Shane told him to come home.

“Yuna, David - my husband just said he doesn’t love me anymore.” “I did not say that,” Shane argues, when he notes the disbelieving expressions on his parents’ faces. “I said we can’t get another dog.” “Exactly,” Ilya wails, throwing his arms up in the air. “Is same thing!” (Or, 5 times Ilya calls Shane his husband, and 1 time Shane calls Ilya his husband.)

In late 2012 when Shane has a meltdown and frantically tells them to call Lily, for the first time Yuna’s ever witnessed, Shane is coaxed out of one of them instead of just suffering through until the exhaustion wins out instead—and all by some mysterious, apparently very well attuned to Shane, 'Lily'. She hadn’t meant to see the number before she’d pressed it and fumbled the phone up to Shane’s ear. It was simply a byproduct of the situation, something Shane had asked for her to do. …Memorizing it and then texting that number to thank Lily for their help was not something she’d been asked to do. But she worries so much about Shane, and Lily is a reassurance. Not a pry for details but the simple, verifiable confirmation: he’s okay. Lily, on the other hand, very much enjoys being able to make oddly specific 'your mother' jokes to Shane much more often now. (And maybe the whole family piece of it, too.)

Yuna Hollander stares at the diamond engagement ring in slight horror as her husband laughs silently next to her on the couch. Her five year old son stares back at her with his doe eyes on her other side. “I'm sorry, sweetie,” she asks as calmly as possible, “did you say a boy gave this to you?” Or, a near lifetime from Yuna's eyes.

Yuna Hollander rounded the corner and finally came in view of the door to Shane’s hospital room. Her hand was almost on the handle when she noticed someone was already in the room, and she stopped in her tracks. At first she thought it might be one of Shane's teammates checking in on him, but the blonde curls at the back of the man’s head told her he wasn’t anyone she would have recognised from the Metros. Thinking about it, it made no sense, but he almost looked like— A clipped voice, slightly muffled by the door but with an unmistakable Russian accent confirmed her bewildered assumption. “Could have been worse,” she heard Ilya Rozanov say. When Ilya goes to visit Shane in the hospital in episode 5, Shane's mother sees him. They talk.

Yuna Hollander… got his number from Hayden Pike? Two people he has rarely if ever spoken to, yet who are undeniably important to Shane. Two people who have absolutely no reason to have his phone number. His eyes scan back up and snag on that name. Lily. She thinks she’s talking to Lily. Ilya’s hands move before his brain. He doesn’t bother to worry about where she could’ve heard the name from, not when he knows Shane never talks to anyone about what they do. No one should know about Lily, but Mrs. Hollander somehow does. She is offering him some kind of information, and he doesn’t care what he has to do to get it—pretending to be Shane’s Boston hookup is nothing. -- Ilya's POV of where nobody knows you
