Balloon drives Mek to the airport, and they talk.• Keeping their relationship a secret has kept them both safe. From his parents, from their less tolerant classmates, from the judgment and potential violence of strangers. Keeping their relationship a secret was smart. Logical. Necessary. It also cut deep into Mek’s heart, like a length of wire pulled tighter every time Balloon stopped a casual kiss or an affectionate touch. He’s been slowly suffocating Mek for over three years, telling himself all the while that Mek would understand and agree with him one day.
