Singing Sparrow, Shadow's Sorrow

by TheGreatWritingYin

He whines. "But I like this one! And your mask is a bird too, so we match!""We don't always have to match, Rye.""...but I love you."Your heart stings. You try to ignore the whisper in the back of your head that he's lying. You try desperately not to jump to the conclusion that he's somehow stringing you on.You run your claws over the sapphire-studded bracelet on your wrist. Would he have married you if he's been lying all this time?Maybe.-OR: The Moon holds a masquerade ball, and The Shadow comes in attendance. Alongside literally everyone else.

eclipse

by TheGreatWritingYin

The Sun leaned forward, and he let himself fall back onto the mattress. Canis was gentle- far gentler than Altair had ever known, far gentler than he'd ever comprehended- pushing his hair aside as he let the blindfold fall away. A soft, breathless gasp against his lips. Altair winced, all-too-suddenly regretting leaving his coat on the floor, twisting his head to hide his face in fur that didn't exist. "It's alright moonlight," the King of Sanctus whispered, "if you get uncomfortable, just tell me, okay? I want you to be happy too." Angels. Canis was his everything. - OR: The Blind and The Faceless end up together on Altair's bed. Things escalate quickly.

The Life and Times of Altair Aquilae

by TheGreatWritingYin

You stared down at the floor, balling your hands into the velvet fabric of your blanket, and tried to feel something other than apathy and relief. You dug your teeth into your tongue until blood filled your mouth, but tears didn't even start to form at the edges of your eyes. You closed them, tuning the advisor's pathetic comforts out and forced yourself to feel just a little bit heartbroken. - OR: The Moon looks back on his life, and barely grows stronger for it.

stupid dorks in platonic love

by TheGreatWritingYin

The head monarch was strong. Stupidly, laughably strong, strong enough to pin them to the ground without seeming to exert any effort at all.(They knew why, of course. He had told them why.)Even then, knowing why didn't stop them from being terribly inconvenienced whenever he felt like combining both of these traits, such as, hypothetically, clinging so hard they couldn't get out of bed in the morning. That was the predicament they were in now, held tight in their husband's arms, wings ruffled in anxiety as weight pressed down on their chest and claws dug into their skin. Usually, he was gentle- far gentler than them, that's for sure- but sometimes he seemed to slip, and slipping resulted in them trapped inches away from freedom beyond the edge of their nest.-OR: The Shadow is inconvenienced, and their star is enamored.

Ornithology

by TheGreatWritingYin

You lean back and spin in the air, letting it hug your wings and tug them forward. They cry in agony, but you've long-since learned to ignore most screams… including theirs. The small, pathetic civilization is closer now. A few of your subjects call in half-hearted acknowledgement as you dive towards the ground, and you answer in kind. Your voice sounds strange and shaky and fractured in the wind, but they seem to hear it well enough. Your dark teal feathers brush against the side of the largest cabin as you land before its front door, barely acknowledging the twisting and turning patterns of stars and shapes carved into the bark. You were there to see them first, you don't need to see them again. You were there to see a lot of things, you think to yourself. Maybe too many things. - OR: The Monarch is the most powerful man in the world, and he makes sure The Mutant knows it.

Grieving those who haven't passed

by TheGreatWritingYin

"I'm gonna fly soon, you know." he said, kicking rocks aside. "I'm gonna fly, and so are you, and we won't even need to use this stupid walkway."You snorted. You had seen your brother's attempts at flight from the backyard- it consisted mostly of him flinging himself off of random objects, hitting the ground, and eagerly scrambling to do it again.Your gaze drifted to the bruises on his knees, wincing at the scrape above his ankle. Without even meaning to, your mind started to drift- if this was what your brother, a fledgeling, got into without flight, what about those who will never fly at all?You became painfully aware of how tiny your wings were, even now, and how you're likely too lame to join your family in the sky.-OR: The Mutant looks back on his life, and makes some resolutions about who's worth it (and who definitely isn't).

Waiting for something to happen (it always does)

by TheGreatWritingYin

The star took a deep breath, digging their claws into the railing. It cracked under their power, leaving all-too-deep etches in the stone. "I would never even think of giving up Arboret. I built it, same as you. You can't just- just, leave and-""And what?" the king spoke softly, golden eyes shimmering, making his companion's breath hitch. "Wait until the day I die, and my son is forced to take the throne while onset by grief? Wait and be stressed and saddled with the fate of thousands, wait and make sure it's all I'll ever know?"Rigel bit their lip. They averted their eyes, fiddling with their bandanna. sing me a little lullaby

by TheGreatWritingYin

Betel knew one thing about their partner, and they knew it from the very first night they ever spent with him- he couldn't sleep alone. The head monarch was... fragile, despite everything. He may have had super strength, and freakishly powerful magic, and a smile that could dazzle the skies- but he was physically incapable of sleeping well when he wasn't in their arms. He had night terrors. Horrible, blood-soaked night terrors. That was fine, of course, they had them too, and they would never judge him for it. But sometimes even their presence didn't stop him from whining in his sleep, ruffling his wings in anxiety, clinging to them like a lifeline as he threatened to unconsciously snap them in half. - OR: The Star has a nightmare, and his shadow will fight the world and more just to keep him safe.

Bandaids and Sea Spray

by FaeMytho

The sun was beginning to set when the knocking came. Aldeba placed the pie she’d been working on for the last hour in the oven and shut the door. With the pie in the oven, she set the little kitchen timer she’d gotten her hands on, and made her way over to the door, pulling it open.“B-Betel?” She stammered, her eyes wide with shock. The Shadow smiled at her, blood gently streaming from a gash over their eye, which was held shut. One of their wings hung limp and bent awkwardly at their side, and their arms were scraped raw in several patches. There were leaves and twigs in their hair.“Hey Aldeba, I uh. Can I come in?”
