Family Heirlooms
by NB_Cecil
Some families pass on watches, furniture, recipes, or books from generation-to-generation; the Klinger family pass on dresses. It’s 1965 and 18-year-old Jamil Klinger has just received his draft papers. His father sends him to Missouri to visit a cousin he says is the custodian of a family tradition which can help Jamil dodge the draft. But Jamil’s cousin gives him something which has far more impact on his life than just a way to evade the draft.----“The Klinger clan has a unique solution when it comes to avoiding military service.”“What’s that?”“Insanity!” Said Max with a flourish of his hand.“I… uh…” Jamil faltered. This really had been a wasted trip.Max clocked Jamil’s discomfort. “Oh, it’s a fool-proof technique. Guaranteed to work.”“Didn’t you serve in Korea?” Asked Jamil.“Yeah… Sometimes it fails,” Max admitted. “But I was this close to getting my section 8 discharge.”“Okay…” Jamil said. He’d come this far. He may as well find out what this was all about now he was here.
