Important things usually only happen once. That's what makes them important. Even if you screwed up and somehow got a second chance at the important thing, it wouldn't be quite as special anymore. Thaco showing up at the village after being gone for years is something important for various reasons, and obviously deserving of a joyful reunion. Being bad at that sort of thing seems to be genetic.
