Frank Wild is left in command on Elephant Island. Somewhere out in the ocean, Ernest Shackleton is trying and failing to pull off some kind of miraculous rescue. This would all be difficult enough even if Wild knew what was going wrong with each successive loop, and could do more than just sit and wait and hope that 800 miles isn't too far for a poorly understood magnetic phenomenon to maintain its hold on the one man he knows who might just have a chance of making it through.
