Hunter doesn't have any claim over the name Deamonne. It's not like he doesn't know that. If anything he would be a Wittebane, no matter how much the thought makes his skin crawl. More realistically, he's just Hunter, and no one in their right mind would claim him as one of their own, as family. Darius was kind to him, but the man had always been very particular about what was his; he wouldn't want a broken boy. He knows all of this. And yet, 'Hunter Deamonne' is still what comes out of his mouth when asked about his name. Or: Five times someone wondered about Hunter's new last name and one time they all knew.

But it still felt like a metaphorical noose tightening around their necks with each passed, wasted second. They were exhausted. And well past the point of being horrified at their situation that they were now seated, practically squatters, in the backyard of downright despondent.The kids were gone. They failed. They kept failing. The heartbreak was something physical now. Clawing into their chests like it had a personal agenda to make them all hollow. And there was an anger there, burning and coiled tight enough to make them all feel brittle with it. The kids, their kids, were still gone. And their millions of impossible, stupid, desperate plans kept failing. But parents, as Darius was quick to catch on, were impossible, stupid, desperate things too. Stubbornness something etched into their titandammed bones, and it didn’t really matter that their millions of plans kept failing. They were exhausted, and horrified, and miserable and angry. They kept coming up with a million more.
