Will sucked in a breath. “I know… we got attacked by a bunch of demos and bats. I was really overwhelmed, and I kept seeing through the monsters’ eyes—it was awful. My head hurt so bad, and then I got grabbed, I think, and… that’s all I really remember. Until waking up here.” Mike swallowed hard, looking down at the white tile. He wasn’t sure if it was a good or bad thing that Will didn’t recall anything after passing out. “Do you remember Mike saving you?” Max inquired, a faint grin reaching her lips. Mike blinked, turned to Max, then risked a glance at Will. The boy was smiling faintly at Max, a blank look on his face. “Mike? Who—Who is that?” OR When Will gets injured during the final battle and ends up losing some of his memory, Mike struggles to come to terms with the fact that his best friend forgot him. In an attempt to recover Will's lost memories, Mike tries to remind him of their adventures together, and accidentally-on-purpose tells Will that they're secret boyfriends. Once Will's memories return, he decides not to say anything, just to see how far Mike is willing to take the charade.

Will guesses the shock must be obvious enough on his face that Mike feels he has to explain himself. “So, you know, like - when you find someone you actually want to kiss, you'll know what it's like and you won't have to be as scared.” Mike’s eyes are frantic again and he’s slowly retracting the hand anchoring Will to the bed. With panic coursing through his body, desperate not to screw his chance up, he catches Mike’s retreating hand with his own. Mike stares at their interlaced fingers, his eyebrows disappearing behind his bangs in shock. ”I-,” Will gets cut off. Mike was never really the patient one. “You can just pretend I’m a girl, if you want.” His voice comes out strangled, nervous. Or Mike kisses Will, Will kisses Mike, and they don't talk about it. Queue a secret situationship and pointless fighting.

I stuck it out just to watch you gasp when MacReady blows up the station. I remember grabbing your hand when it happened, and you held on. Was I in love with you then? I remember the last words you said to me before you went missing. It was a seven. I remember when you came back, when I finally saw you again, and I thought my heart was going to stop. I swear to God, Will, it was like I could breathe again for the first time in days.Mike and Will get through Vecna, get through a million almost-confessions and even more death scares. Will bites his lower lip before responding with, “Like, The Party all together again?” “No, well, yes, but not just that.” Mike clarifies, conflict spreading across his face and taking pauses between his words, like he’s carefully choosing them. Mike never wanted Will to be alone, not because he was weak or couldn’t handle himself. Because Mike knew that as long as he was there, he could throw himself between Will and any semblance of danger — self-preservation instincts out the window — and protect the person he needed more than anyone. Which ended up including protecting Will from Mike’s own heart. - or, Will is unconscious, stuck in a trance from Vecna. Mike reads a letter that he wrote soon after Will moved to California, but never sent. Mike finally lets his heart want what it wants.
