His head lolls to the side, toward where Carlos must be. “Babe?” “Hey,” Carlos says, his voice softening while his hand continues to smooth TK’s hair. “I’ve got someone who wants to say hi.” The phone camera flips again and TK’s face disappears briefly as Carlos turns the phone around so TK can see the screen. Her son comes back into focus and Gwyn can make out the edge of Carlos’s face in the corner, leaning on the bed. TK swallows and she watches his eyes focus. “Mom?” “Oh, my sweet boy.” OR After a day of interminable silence, cell phone calls can finally get through to Texas and Gwyneth Morgan can finally speak to her family. First with Carlos and TK and later with Owen.
