When it rains, it pours. And pours.It’s a bleak evening, the pavements are empty due to the torrential downpour and the roads are packed to bursting with traffic. It’s noisy due to the drill of water against concrete and metal and the shrill blare of frustrated drivers ramming their hands against car horns. The din is enough to drown out the usual sounds of the area, the clacking of an escort’s heels against the pavement or the swish of noodles as they’re tossed on hot griddles by local yakisoba vendors. So too does it drown out the pained heaving of a wounded man where he lays slumped in a Shinjuku back-alley.

That would be the only explanation for what’s occurring this very second. What duality. Dazai, craver of death, having his heart thrive by Chuuya’s resolve. Chuuya, craver of life, letting his heart wither for Dazai’s sake. The two converging on hatred, spite, resentment, and care. It’s enough to send anyone into a fit of cynical cackling.
