What started this tradition? Thinking of its origin brought Lexa back to the arena, guiding her legs where the remaining nightbloods stood. Some nightbloods bitterly theorized Titus’s lessons of duty surrounding the origins of the conclave were a lie. Instead, at the death of the first commander, it was greed, not duty, which prompted slaughter. If that is the case, she wondered how many of them ran. Luna in particular was fond of that theory. How, she would always ask out of Titus’s earshot, did greed turn into duty? Lexa rarely bothered herself with hows and whys. Things simply were.
