All of his childhood memories were of him alone, looking for someone to take care of him. But he was a teenager now, and he was supposed to be independent and take care of himself. He was almost an adult. He had taken care of himself for so long, it was almost like he had been an adult from the time he was five. So, instead of saying that he was too scared to fall asleep when he was by himself, he said that he hated it.
