Summary
Lorenz gives him a scathing look. “Spidersweed,” he explains snootily (endearingly, Claude has come to call it), “is a flower of fortitude and resilience; of fidelity and a lifetime of promises.”
“That’s a lot for one flower to mean,” Claude tells him with a teasing grin.
Lorenz, as predicted, flushes and sputters and protests the significance of its symbolism, but inwardly Claude agrees. Spidersweed is a beautiful flower, with wonderful meaning.
"Will you promise to survive this war with me, Lorenz?" Claude says conversationally, but his stare is piercing and his smile speaks volumes.
Lorenz… pauses. He looks at Claude with wide eyes, struck speechless for once in his life.
"Promise me," Claude commands.
In the face of that, Lorenz can do nothing but agree.
Claude falls in love with the idea of a flower; his Deer show him what love truly means.
