Summary

Wangji thought back to his childhood, hearing about upcoming engagements and dutifully turning away from the words because gossip was not allowed.  He remembered pairs of lovers coming out of the forest, their ribbons removed from their foreheads and attached to wrists before they went to meet with their parents.  Sometimes they were bruised and a little bloody, the exhausted, ragged state of them sharply juxtaposed by the strangely satisfied smiles on their faces.  Other times, they were not disheveled at all, with no smiles, walking a little apart, but with their ribbons still on each other's wrists.

And Wangji understood that one must win a duel to succeed in an engagement.

The AU where the Lan sect lasso their prospective partners with their forehead ribbons in order to propose marriage.
