Summary
Alex’s smile freezes on his face. His heart skids to a stop for one terrible moment. His brain balks at such a knee-jerk reaction from the renegade muscle and delivers a swift kick to his poor lungs (always caught in the middle of any upheaval), expelling all of the air and threatening his throat (always in cahoots with his heart) that it better stay open to admit the next breath if it knows what’s good for it. His heart restarts with a vengeance, beating up a furious storm. The tears that never get to come out and play mulishly shove the smile right out of his eyes but his lips are still frozen in place so Alex is pretty sure no one will notice.
