Summary
When their first con goes off without a hitch her brother picks her up in a swinging whirl of laughter and pure joy, so bright his smile that she has to squint against it. It’s awkward and clumsy, she being of a height with him now in her fancy new boots, but even though she can feel the nice print cotton of her dress getting creased she cannot bring herself to care. The day of the funeral it pours sun-up to sundown. Fitting, Noel thinks bitterly, that the first rain of the season should come on such a day; it soaks the ground and the mourners the same, the ground and handkerchiefs alike.
