Summary
MAJOR SPOILERS; Benedict Route, Post-Chapter 17Roland realises after his cathartic battle with Serenoa how his reasoning to side with Hyzante came from cowardice (a bystander who feels helpless; overburdened and broken from the crown) and the dangerous trap that is utilitarianism (maximise happiness--at the expense of others). He wishes to sincerely apologise to Frederica (his second closest friend that he metaphorically threw under a carriage) and the Roselle without justifying his reasoning, making it about him, or seeking forgiveness. If Frederica wishes nothing to do with him and curses him he accepts it.
