Summary
His son is standing very still, gazing back toward the burnt-out remnants of the barn. He is his mother’s child, narrow and gangly as a colt, the same red-blond hair, the same way of standing like a river bird about to take flight. But there is something tense and fearful about him now, hands clenched tight at his sides, chin raised in defiance at the sky. He wants to say it’s all right again, to promise safety and protection and all the things a father should.
But there are small flames licking across his son’s knuckles, orange against the black night, and they do not burn him.
[While this is part of a series in case I want to use it later, it very much stands on its own and you don't have to have read any other parts to get it. Backstories are fun that way.]
