Summary
Tensions had always been high between the fairies and humans, but they generally respected the borders between them, a desolate slab of inhospitable earth. Akaashi Keiji, Queen of Thorns and Ruler of the Fairies, kept her people where they belonged, safe within the border. But a human manages to find his way into her realm and into her heart, and Akaashi pays the price for it. The human, now called King for bringing home the Fairy Queen’s wings, is the first to break the fragile peace, no matter how he spins the story. Perhaps the tipping point was something as petty as not inviting her to the birth of the Princess, but it’s that one point where Akaashi’s anger roars, cursing the babe. However, the years go by, and due to her running off and managing to find Akaashi’s hiding spot (really, they should be taking better care of the child), she finds that this strange child likes her. Not that she would know much better, but something in her softens oh-so slightly. The daughter of the traitor regards her so warmly, and she finds her shriveled heart warming up to this child’s smile. And she can’t lose her. She must break this curse before it takes away the only piece of genuine human kindness she believes in.
